1. Given what we know about incarceration, identify and discuss some of the key differences between a housing men and women and prison.
2. How many adult female institutions are there in Indiana? How do these facilities differ from one another? You may use the IDOC web page to answer this question
3. Over the past 10 years there has been an increase in the number of female offenders incarcerated nationally. Women present unique problems for state department of corrections. One of the issues is specifically related to pregnancy and motherhood. Reviewing government resources such as the National Institute of Corrections and the academic literature describe some of the specific issues for women and what facilities are doing to cope with the growing population of women, in particular mothers behind bars. What are some of the collateral consequences for the children? What are some of the ways the state of Indiana is working to foster the parenting relationship between mother and child?
4. Choose one program offered at Indiana Womens Prison (This program must be different than the program you reviewed for the male institutions assignment). Find two academic scholarly resources and develop an argument as to why and what extent this program may or may not reduce recidivism.
5. Watch the videos entitled Babies Behind Bars and Separation. These videos focus on women have babies in prison in Indiana (Babies Behind Bars) and Alabama (Separation). How do the state correctional facilities differ in their approach to dealing with mothers behind bars? What are the benefits and adverse effects of either keeping the babies with their mothers for an extended period of time or separating the mothers from their children while they are behind bars?
