Nelson: Health Informatics: An Interprofessional Approach
Chapter 1: Introduction: The Evolution of Health Informatics
Naming the Specialty
Browse the Internet for information on informatics. Determine which naming convention
is most common for the overall specialty in the health care setting (e.g., biomedical and
health informatics, health informatics). Based on your research, postulate which term is
more prevalent.
Focal Areas of Health Informatics
Visit the International Medical Informatics Association Web site (http://www.imia-
medinfo.org). Browse the site, and identify the focal areas of health informatics. Compare
these areas with the focal areas found in Figures 1-4 and 1-5.
Educational Opportunities in Health Informatics
The following table identifies the various types and levels of education possible in health
care informatics. After reviewing the table, search the Internet and find one or more
programs for each cell in the table. If you do not find as program for a specific cell,
explain why you think that may be the case.
