Ginsberg, in his poem Supermarket in California, uses the symbol of the supermarket to address injustices created by cultural norms — stereotypes, limitations and expectations–in other words, the boxes–that society imposes on individuals based on ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and status. These preconceived boxes and norms often leave individuals feeling isolated, vulnerable, trapped and overwhelmed by the challenges to be treated fairly, to have access to equal opportunities, to be recognized for their talents, hard work and accomplishments as well illustrated in Hidden Figures. And in some cases, some vulnerable populations are left not only struggling to succeed, but simply to survive in a Capitalist society as we see in Sotos poignant portrayal of immigrant farmworkers, as well in Ehrenreichs Selling in Minnesota (Nickel and Dimed). Ginsberg concludes his poem with the question Will we stroll dreaming of the lost America of love past blue automobiles in driveways, home to our silent cottage/ suggesting that, for some, the notion of the American dream, or the very image of that dream has become as Ginsberg says lost, or inaccessible.
