Create an informational flyer that compares the two pedagogical approaches described by Freire in “The Banking Concept of Education.” Your objective is to distill Freire’s theories of “Banking Style Education” and “Problem-Posing Education” into a clearly communicated bulletin that highlights the differences between these learning styles.
What to do:
Picture a flyer that you may have seen on a school campus or in an office. Usually, those flyers are trying to quickly draw your attention to some kind of information. Often there is a brief descriiption about the event, club, issue, or concept being presented. A flyer is a place to find the most important details about something without going into the whole issue. Imagine a flyer for an event and what’s included: What/Where/When/Why and how to find more information elsewhere. For the Freire assignment, you are asked to briefly “advertise” the two pedagogical theories that Freire presents. What is the most important thing you need to get across to someone who doesn’t know anything about either “Banking Style Education” or “Problem Posing Education”? Maybe consider three main points about each theory and include those on the flyer. Who might benefit from learning about these theories? Where can your audience (the person viewing the flyer) learn more? Are there any catchphrases or pithy ways you sum up each style?
You can use whatever software platform you feel most comfortable using, be it Word, Publisher, Canva, Adobe, Photoshop, Paint 3D, etc. This is your chance to be as creative as you want, but it’s also okay if you want to keep it simple. The purpose of this mini assignment is not to create an exhaustive presentation of Freire’s points, but rather to articulate the content in a different mode. This is a big-picture assignment, so don’t worry about being too detailed. Your submission will be graded for effort.
