When a researcher or scholar attempts to find the theme of a piece of literature, they sometimes look to the authors life or the culture at the time that the text was written. This provides some vital information to understanding the message about life that is presented in a text. When this approach to analysis is used, it falls under the literary theory of New Historicism.

Your task is to write a research paper using the theory of New Historicism. You will choose a piece of literature from the list provided (all are texts that we have read in class this year). After choosing a short story, play, novel, or speech, you will conduct research to find how the authors life or how events in history inspired the events or themes found in the text. Below are some questions that you may want to answer while conducting your research.

Information you could include in your essay:
What was happening in the United States or the world at the time the story was written?
How do the themes of the story reflect the culture of the time in which it was written?
Did the author have personal reasons for writing the story?
Was the author inspired by real places, people, or events?
What was the reception of the book? Did it lead to social change?
