The Capstone paper is divided into several parts throughout the course in order to support you in completing a successful paper:

The capstone paper part descriiptions are explained below:

Module 1 : Choose a topic

Module 2: Write the Introduction

This is a very important component of the Capstone Paper. This section is where the student highlights the seriousness of the problem that will drive the project. Your introduction section should open with a one to two sentence descriiption of what the topic is and what is happening. However, it is not enough to write one sentence describing the problem in an academic paper. The rest of the introduction section will go on to further describe the problem, its prevalence, and make a general statement about its impact. Subsequent paragraphs provide more details adding to the understanding of the topic, significance, and related concepts.

Students should SELL to the reader on the problem by including statistics, published articles, consequences, etc. By emphasizing the magnitude of the problem, there will be a logical next step for the student to describe their purpose statement.

Clearly present your purpose statement at the end of your introduction section. A purpose statement helps to focus on a piece of writing. A purpose statement also provides a way for you to research a specific topic from your own point of view. A purpose statement does not have to make an argument. Rather, it can be a question to resolve. It must, however, be specific. The work of your results and discussion sections is to investigate—or further illuminate—your purpose statement.
Your capstone paper will focus on your purpose statement. All the research you incorporate into your results section and discussion section should directly relate to your capstone research topic and purpose statement.

Your purpose statement is developed from identifying a question, an area of conflict, concern, or controversy (a gap between what is wanted and what is observed). The purpose statement establishes the importance of the topic that the student chose and creates reader interest.

Students should focus on how the capstone paper will add to the literature that is already published on their topic. Students will explore the knowledge base of their area of study, in alignment with program outcomes, by pursuing their own closed questions and lines of inquiry, i.e. “What is the existing answer to my question?” Students will submit the first draft of their introduction of the paper in Module 2. This will require students to research scholarly journals and resources to obtain a clearer vision of their purpose statement and capstone topic. The introduction should be at least 3-4 pages, contain paragraphs at least 4-5 sentences in length, and at least 5 references for the entire introduction (remember that every reference must have an in-text citation).
Module 3: Write the Methods section and Annotated Bibliography:

The methods section of the paper is how students go about obtaining the information needed for the capstone paper. Did you use peer-reviewed scholarly journals, videos, news articles, etc? The methods section is important because the reader wants to know whether or not the information that is being presented can be trusted. What were the selection criteria the student used and why? Did the scholarly journals that you found to use data that was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach? Did the studies conducted take place in a controlled environment? Another aspect to examine is why the study was conducted using those methods; investigate the research methods appropriate for your topic area. What type of participants were used, materials needed, and procedures occurred during these studies? This information belongs in the Methods section. This submission should be up to one page in length.

Annotated Bibliography
An annotated bibliography is a list of scholarly articles that you have obtained that you believe will be used in the results and discussion sections of your capstone paper. You will list the reference information in APA format and then provide a brief descriiption of the article. This allows students to determine if the article is a good fit for the capstone paper or not. The annotated bibliography helps the students assess the strengths and weaknesses of the articles and how important it is for their topic. Students should write at least a paragraph (4-5 sentences) for each reference, for at least 10-15 sources. While you are completing the annotated bibliography, it is important to keep the Capstone Paper purpose statement and topic. Students may find there are certain parts of articles that are better suited for various themes of the capstone paper topic (i.e. the topic is nutrition, and maybe students are grouping the sources by subcategories such as nutrients, food deserts, community gardens) but they all relate to the main topic.
Module 4: Write the Results Section

We recommend students create an outline of their results section, using the information from their annotated bibliography, before writing as an organizational exercise. Your outline will not be turned in for assessment. The outline is a way to help students organize the results section, identifying the different topics and subtopics, and structuring the paragraphs to transition into each other in a logical way. For example, it would be logical to have a topic about nutrition and immediately transition to writing about nutritional deficiencies. You want to build up to each subtopic and transition in your writing, constructing a narrative for the reader through the organization and presentation of the research and data. The results section should contain 5 to 6 main topics and at least 2-3 subtopics per the main point.

The Results section is where students are presenting to the reader all the information the student gathered which supports the Purpose Statement. Students should make sure the information is written in a logical order so the paper flows well. When discussing the implications of the findings of the research study, you should include points of strength as well as points of weakness in the study. The research studies should be presented in an organized manner, based on identified trends, and should lead the reader toward a conclusion about the purpose statement. Examples of organization strategies include chronological, design method used in a research study, in vitro studies, in vivo studies, and grouping studies in relation to aspects of your purpose statement, or by author. This section is not for proving any information correct or incorrect as students should not have any bias when writing this section. This section will help the student and the reader see the purpose statement from many different angles so they can compare and contrast results between studies in an objective manner, without inserting their own opinion. Students are just simply reporting the results of the study. The results section should be at least 10-12 pages.
Module 5: Write the Discussion Section

The Discussion section is where the student tells the reader the findings of the Results section and how it all relates to the purpose statement. Begin with a brief review of the purpose statement and a brief summary of the goals of the paper and what has been learned so far. Do not rewrite your Introduction here, rather summarize briefly what has been learned up to this point. Students should answer the “so what” part of the purpose statement in relation to the research and data presented in the Results section. You have presented all the information about the Methods and Results- now what? What was significant about the findings in the Results section? What new information helped the student to discover the answer to the purpose statement? A good point of reference to keep in mind while writing this section of your paper is, the reader should be able to read the Introduction section and Discussion section of your paper and have a general idea and summary of the entire paper. The Discussion section is the most important part of the paper because it is showing the reader you are able to think critically about the topic. Students should also express the importance of the purpose statement and the meaning of the research and the key findings. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the reviewed literature? How does the evidence answer the purpose statement? This submission should be at least 2-3 pages in length.
Module 6: Submit the First Draft

Students will submit the first draft of the final paper (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion sections from Modules 2-5), and the first draft of the conclusion section. Students should take feedback from all module submissions, and polish the paper into one document.

Conclusion
Writing your conclusion section: Present your conclusion about the purpose statement of your paper. What were you able to answer about your purpose statement and what gaps did you identify in the research and data? Discuss the key findings of your Discussion section. Present clear recommendations for the next steps needed to be taken to address the gaps you identified to be able to completely address the purpose statement. This section should be no longer than one page.
Module 7: Submit your Final Draft

Students will submit their final draft of the paper by incorporating all of the feedback given to them by their professors. The final draft should be 15-20 pages, not including the title or reference pages.
Module 7: Capstone Editorial Summary

Students will write and submit a short summary of their capstone paper, including their topic and purpose statement, methods, key findings in their results and discussion sections, and their conclusions and recommendations. The summary should be 250 to 300 words.
