This assignment is structured to help guide a process of inquiry and action for applying the concept of renewable and sustainable energy to complex resource problems in their own areas of professional and personal interest. This could be in terms of a place (i.e., geographic context), economic activity (e.g., energy, transportation, industry), analysis (e.g., sustainability assessment), or social construct (e.g., equity, justice). The case study project will involve the definition and characterization of the system and its drivers, the identification of key stakeholders, and an understanding of the scale at which governance processes are manifested. There are two components of the case study project: an in-class presentation (10%) and a final project paper (30%).
Project paper: Students will prepare a paper related to their case study project. The paper should begin with an introduction that describes the energy system context of the case study, including a brief history, current status, and future challenges. The paper should include an examination of the drivers of change, a description of key stakeholders and governance processes, and projections for the future. All sources of data and other information should be cited, and a list of references should be provided. Case study project papers should be 10-12 pages in length, with double-spaced text, excluding references.
