Words: 500
Pages: 2
Subject: Uncategorized

Assignment Part One: Reading
1. Get some background on the history of each journal by reading the “About” sections on their websites:
Feminist Studies: About Us
Signs: About Us
2. Access the most recent issue of each journal via the UMass Darmouth Library.
Feminist Studies: Go to the Claire T. Carney Library homepage. Click on “QuickLinks: Articles and Databases.” Click on “J,” and then “JSTOR.” Click on the “Browse” drop-down menu and choose “Browse by title.” Go to “F,” and then “Feminist Studies.”
Signs: Go to http://signsjournal.org and scroll down to the last date in the section. There should be a hyperlink to the current issue.
3. Examine the table of contents for the most recent issue of each journal. Look at the authors’ names and the article titles. For each journal, choose at least 2 abstracts and 1 article to read in full. After you have done this, answer the questions below in Part Two.
Part Two: Writing
Answer each question below, A, B, and C. Each answer should be at least one well-developed paragraph. Be as specific as possible and use citations to support your answers.
What types of topics are discussed in the most recent issues of each journal? Do not simply list the titles of the articles or simply quote the abstracts; describe the topics in your own words to demonstrate that you understand the range of topics as they are described in the journals.
What observations can you make regarding the two articles you focused on? Do not just summarize what each author says. Be specific in your discussion of the argument and content. Describe how the authors organize the argument; what kind of evidence or research is used (quantitative data, qualitative, primary and/or secondary sources, etc.).
What conclusions do you draw about women’s and gender studies scholarship today, after examining the table of contents of the most recent issues of Signs and Feminist Studies and after comparing two articles, one from each journal? Use an evaluative voice in your writing. That is, remember that you are evaluating the writing of others in order to make specific conclusions. Thus, your job is to describe and justify why and how you have reached these conclusions.
Length: Between 1200-1400 words total, double-spaced. 12 pt. font, Times New Roman or Garamond. One-inch margins. No additional spaces between paragraphs (turn off extra spaces in Word styles, if necessary). Assignments that do not meet these criteria will returned without a grade.
