My teachers here! ″ I’ll open the door. “said Katie as she rushes to open the door. She ran ahead of her parents to open the door. Francisca is conducting home visits to all the children and their families in her preschool classroom. It is two weeks before the first day of class and a little over a week before the Open House event. Francisca approaches the home of Todd and Mary Porter and their 4- year old daughter Katie. When Francisca called to make arrangements for this visit, Todd described recent family changes. Todd is Katie’s father and Mary became her stepmother when she married Todd six months ago. Todd quit his job a month ago and is looking for a new job. Francisca has noticed the smell of alcohol and smoke in the house. Mary works as a nurse in a local hospital. Mary is extremely busy at work. She often has to work double shifts. Other nurses do not come in. they call out sick. Mary has to be super cautious because many of the patients she sees have Covid 19. Mary has a child from a previous marriage and this child is a teenager. The teenager is in another room with music blaring loudly. Mary tries to indicate to the teen to stop the music. She opens the door of the room where the teenager is listening to music. She abruptly and loudly shouts the words _Shut Up and turn that Music off″ Then she turns to her husband and changes her voice and tone to a sweet soft sound. The teenager gets mad and slams the door and yells and uses expletive language. The Dad is embarrassed by this action and his face turns ″red″. The mandate of wearing masks is employed. When the door opened to receive the visit from Francisca Katie jumped and shouted repeatedly.” Let’s go to my room!” while Francisca tries to talk with her parents. Katie runs from room to room and comes back to her parents and asks” Can she go to my room now?” As Francisca steps into Katie′s room she mentally notes the abundance of dolls, puzzles, books, crayons, wall posters, and a number of other toys either on shelves or piled into a large rubber tub mixed up and located on the floor. Katie uses her hands to block her ears. She dances around the room with her arms tucked under her shoulders. She slams cabinet doors and shouts loudly. She uses a chant and monotone voice to demand attention. Francisca watches and listens as Katie shows and talks about her toys. After Katie talks about each toy, she throws it across the room. Francisca pulls out a book from her purse. Francisca shares photos of what the school classroom will look like. She shares where Katie′s cubbie will be in the classroom. Katie is curious about the purse, so she decides to empty the purse on the floor. The parents are frantic and start yelling at the child. They then blame each other The arguments get louder. Katie decides she does not want to wear her mask and throws this on the floor. The parents indicate they do not know how to deal with their child. They indicate to Francisca that they buy a lot of toys for their child because she likes them. If Katie breaks a toy they will get her another one because she usually has a temper tantrum. Mary explained she just bought her daughter a brand new IPAD because she threw it across the room last week. The Dad said she needed to be punished, so he had Katie stand at a wall with her head and nose touching the wall. He spanked her and said she needed to stay there for fifty-five minutes. He said one hour was too long. While this is occurring, the teenager emerges from the room smoking what smelled like ″marijuana″. Mary looked at the teen and mumbled something in a low voice. The teen went to another room slamming doors again. Questions to ponder: In what ways does a home visit reflect developmentally appropriate best practices? How can parents benefit from this visit? How can the child benefit from this visit? Where can I tell the parents to get help? What clues are available that indicate there may be many issues in this household? What resources can help this family?
