Students will write and submit a final essay. Essays should be 2500-4000 words, with a minimum of five published sources. Essays should be typed and double-spaced, and should utilize a consistent in-text citation format. Essays should respond to one of the following topics:
1. Select an avant-garde film artist with a body of work (more than one film) and profile that artist. Artist profiles should include analysis of significant works, and should note influences on and of the artist.
2. Select a specific technique used in avant-garde film. Discuss the methodology of the technique, and then analyze its use in at least three films. The technique you select should be used by more than one artist for purposes of comparison.
3. Select an artistic and/or cultural movement that included avant-garde film. Discuss the makeup, history, influences of and participants in the movement. The movement you discuss may be unique to film, or may include other artistic practices as well.
