Choose a film or book (examples are provided but you may choose one of your own, just check with me first) that portray someone with special needs (or is “different”). While it may be fun to watch/read it again, you can complete this assignment/discussion by memory of a movie or book.
In a two-page essay please answer the following questions:
• Provide a short summary (one paragraph) of the story and characters from the book/film.
• From a film or book you have chosen, remember a character who has a disability. What was their disability? Was it accurate? Why or why not? Was the person with disabilities portrayed in a positive or negative light? Explain (one paragraph)
• How did you feel about the way the character(s) was depicted? Explain. (One paragraph)
• After seeing the film or reading the book, do you believe audiences or readers come away having a better understanding of the disability and the challenges it presents? Why or why not? (One paragraph)
• After taking this class, has your perception of people with disabilities changed? If so, how? (one or two paragraphs)
