NEWSLETTER for HEALTH EDUCATION SPECIALISTS PROJECT This assignment asks you to research certain facets within our field and create an Employment Newsletter for Health Education Specialists. This means that you are writing this newsletter FOR other professionals in our field Your Newsletter should include the following subtitles and content: 1. Newsletter Title (8 points) Make sure your newsletter has a title. Even better if it’s catchy! 2. Where Do Health Education Specialists Work? (24 points) List three organizations (anywhere in the United States) where health educators are employed. Include the following: a) name of organization b) physical location of organization c) Short 1- to 2-sentence description of what each organization does. 3. A Day in the Life of a Health Education Specialist (12 points) For one of the organizations above, list the job responsibilities for the Health Education Specialist. 4. Upcoming Conferences (10 points) List two upcoming national (or international) conferences that health education specialists can attend (virtually or in- person) in 2022. For each conference, include: a) name of conference, b) conference theme, c) date(s) of the conference, d) registration start date (or deadline). NOTE: Do NOT list conferences that don’t make sense for Health Education Specialists to attend (e.g. conferences meant for medical doctors, surgeons, dentists, nurses, etc). Points will be deducted if you do so! 5. New Developments (20 points) In 200 words, describe one development in the news that would impact Health Education Specialists, for example, a new law or regulation, a national or local program, or recent political actions (does NOT have to be COVID-related). 6. Salary Update (6 points) List the average salary (national) of a Health Education Specialist. Cite your source (not just a hyperlink!) Make sure your source is valid (and not second-hand reporting from a news site or other business website, e.g. GlassDoor). 7. Becoming a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) (18 points) a. Briefly discuss 3 benefits of obtaining CHES certification. b. List the criteria one must meet in order to take the CHES exam. c. Briefly describe three factoids about the CHES that you have learned through your research. (HINT: A great place to start is www.nchec.org) 8. May is Health Literacy Awareness Month (30 points) a. Describe the purpose behind Awareness Month. b. Define health equity. c. Present 5 national statistics that highlight disparities resulting from the health issue you’ve selected. d. Describe 2 creative activities that a Health Education Specialist can implement at a local level to promote X Month. Don’t invent the wheel; do your research and learn about the various ways that this month is being promoted. Then, revise and make it your own. e. Provide 4 resources for Health Education Specialists who want to learn more about this topic. Don’t simply list the name of an agency (without a way to contact them). Make sure to give enough information for each resource you provide (e.g. name of agency, website, phone number) so that someone reading your newsletter could readily use this resource.
