This reflective essay has to demonstrate that my role in the project relates to each of Gibbs Reflective Cycle. I have to say in the intro I will be using a particular Communication theory (I was thinking of the Empathy communication theory). The lecturer mentioned for example, “I felt this …., according to Bloom (2011) this is because” and apply this to my role in the project, incorporating Gibbs Please scroll down to look at my notes of my involvement Please can you email me urgently with any queries. We are asking you to reflect on your role in the group project, particularly on an aspect that you think went well and how you would like to develop this further. Develop your critical reflection, using Gibbs’ (1988) Reflective Cycle and any of the communication theories. Examples of communication theories include but are not limited to emotional intelligence, empathy, diversity, and feedback. Details of Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle are outlined below. GIBBS 1988 REFLECTIVE CYCLE: What is the Gibbs 1988 reflective cycle? One of the most famous cyclical models of reflection leading you through six stages exploring an experience: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan. Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle can be used to reflect on both negative and positive experiences, however, the prompts below refer to positive aspects as this is specific to this assessment. As with any written academic assignment, you must include an introduction, main body and conclusion where you will develop an argument and discussion. You must remember to reference your work using Harvard Referencing System. IMPORTANT: Remember to check your work against the assessment rubric. Step 1 – Description This should be a brief description of the experience or event to set the scene and give context. Step 2 – Feelings Consider what you were thinking and how you felt before the experience. How did you feel during the experience? How did you feel after the experience? This is another short descriptive step, rather than being analytical. Step 3 – Evaluation Evaluation looks objectively at positive aspects of the experience. Describe key elements that went particularly well. Step 4 – Analysis Analysis attempts to explain why the experience was positive and should form the largest section of your reflection. Take into account points made in the previous steps and identify any factors which helped you . previous experiences, carrying out research or consulting with others. Consider your role in the experience and how you contributed to the success of this experience? Step 5 – Conclusion Focus on what you have learned. Are there any skills you developed as a result of the experience? If so, how would you apply them in future experiences or situations? Are there areas of knowledge or skills you now need to develop from this positive experience? Is there anything you would do differently in the future? Try to give specific examples. Step 6 – Action Plan What specific actions can you now take to build on your knowledge or skills? You could include any training that would benefit you (formal or otherwise), as well as identifying sources of information or support (people or resources). Reference Gibbs, G. The lecturer has provided additional information for the essay. It is my personal reflection on my feelings/thoughts of my involvement in the project. Why I felt the way I did – using Gibbs Reflective (1988) cycle. The feelings I felt to reference a communication theory Empathy communication theory. ADDITIONAL INFORMTION FROM THE LECTURER: The Analysis – connect to the theory. Have to reference everything Harvard Referencing It’s about the communication in my group. My role (Please see my notes listed below) It is “I”, “My opinion”, “My feelings” and then to elaborate Conclusion: Where I started in my assignment. Sources. How I have changed my mind – what, why. How books have made sense of my feelings. The personalities – some members more dominant. Are there any similar experiences in other groups? The positive learning experience (Please see notes listed below). How to use the theory to best make use of the essay. I have to cover each of Gibbs 1988 Reflective Cycle. In the conclusion: I thought this way -. Now I think this way – what has changed my mind? I have to show what I have learned from Gibbs 1988 Reflective cycle theory. Have to demonstrate what I have learned from other communication theory – although I will focus on the Empathy communcation theory. I have to focus on what went well (Please see noes below). Make it small and focus – simpler) Positive learning experience – I will focus on the Empathy communication theory (AND STAY THROUGHOUT ON THIS THEORY) Strong conclusion: The lecturer interested in what I have learned. I am writing from MY personal perspective. It is a personal reflection of my involvement in the project. Outline: In the Intro: I will be using Gibbs 1988 Reflective cycle (DO NOT NEED TO EXPLAIN WHAT GIBBS THEORY IS). Have to paragraph each of Gibbs 1988 Reflective cycle. Example: ACTION PLAN (part of Gibbs 1988 Reflective cycle) – what I wil do in the future. Use emotional intelligence – (I have the book ‘Emotional Intelligence – why it can matter more than IQ, by Daniel Goffman’. The lecturer gave the example: “Bloom (2011) gave me the idea that empathy is important because … (obviously word this differently). The project is about trials & errors – I as part of the project group had to re-write on some occasions my research. Stress – the group dynamics, some group members more dominant than others; chasing up some group members for their contribution; re-arranging my personal time to attend group zoom meetings in the evenings . Anxiety – about meeting deadline for the project to be submitted in on time, anxiety. The group project was about Teamwork. Example is: In the introduction: I will use the communication theory of Empathy, to explain my feelings in the project. Bloom (2011) says this is because … I have to use Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle. Have to cover each of Gibbs cycle to describe my experience in the project Have to reference everything Use Harvard Referencing The essay is about communication in my group. To use My feelings / my thoughts on my experience In the intro: I will be using Gibbs Reflective Cycle. Example Bloom (2011) gave the idea that empathy is important because I will focus on this theory to explain my experience . It is a personal reflection. My feelings. In the Conclusion: Where I started in the project. How have I changed my mind. How have I made sense of my feelings. My thoughts at the beginning of the project – why and which theory to support it Positive learning experience: why? Use a theory to support why I felt the experience was positive, for example I learned that I have personal resilience because (Reference with theorist) I have to show what I have learned from Gibbs theory. What I learned from other communication theories and how they have helped me to develop – in what way (give examples and incite reference them). MY ROLE IN THE PROJECT: I personally contributed to the project’s success because I sent in my research notes on time, I attended meetings, I respected the ideas of the other team members. I always conducted myself in a professional manner, because there were occasions when group members were unprofessional I adopted a coping mechanism to avoid confrontation (USE A COMMUNICATION THEORY, THEORIST OR QUOTE) I also was assertive in my contribution to the project Although there were occasions when disagreements I respected the There was tension in the group with a member who My personal contribution also included using my personal time outside of the class hours to attend telephone meetings, group meetings after class, time management – to rearrange appointments to attend group meetings. THIS RELATES TO ( ) COMMUNICATION THEORY BECAUSE … THIS ALSO RELATES TO SOCIAL WORK BECAUSE I WILL HAVE OCCASIONS WHEN I HAVE TO ATTEND LAST MINUTE MEETINGS, STAY LATE AFTER WORK HOURS TO ACCEPT A CALL, TO DO CASE NOTES AT THE WEEKEND, TO ATTEND GROUP MEETINGS AT THE WEEKEND. THIS RELATES TO SOCIAL WORK BECAUSE (USE THEORY/THEORIST) My personal reflection is that I have learned to listen to views or contributions that I disagree with. I have learned to listen and aim to understand other group members perspective. I have learned to compromise and accept group members notes which I disagreed with. I have learned the importance of team work. I have deal with stressful situations by encountered situation with fellow students who are temperamental. To be non-judgemental in the non-attendance of some groupo members to learn that their personal circumstances hugely affected their performance. As a result of this I have learned to be more tolerable to others. I have learned that my personal values of respect for others, because I respected the views of each group member (GIVE EXAMPLE OF THEORY, THEORIST, QUOTE) Empathy for others (some group members experienced personal distress) Patience – some group members responded late to group attendance requests or could not attend meetings – were all used. THIS RELATES TO SOCIAL WORK BECAUSE (USE THEORY/THEORIST). I reflected at the end of the project and I learned new skills, I learned that I will work with people who are unco-operative. I have learned that it is important to engage with your colleagues. I have learned the importance of using mechanisms to de-stress. I have learned that all forms of communication are vital, especially in group work. This includes Non Verbal Communication, looking at facial expressions, listening to voice tones in telephone meetings. I learned that I do have communication skills that are vital to project work – listening (GIVE EXAMPLE) engaging (GIVE EXAMPLE) respect (GIVE EXAMPLE) . I also learned that I need to develop my assertive skills to confront group members whose personalities are My personality I also learned that I am analytical because I reflected on the team meetings, my contribution and I also thought about the different personalities of the group members and I adopted my behaviour, my communication style to communicate with them. I learned I have to develop skills to deal with different personalities (GIVE EXAMPLE, GIVE THEORY/THEORIST) THIS RELATES TO SOCIAL WORK BECAUSE (USE THEORY/THEORIST). I learned that I am an analytical person because I analysed my performance in the group project and I analysed my feelings of (USE GIBBS 1988 REFLECTIVE CYCLE) IMPORTANT: Remember to check your work against the assessment rubric. Step 1 – Description This should be a brief description of the experience or event to set the scene and give context. Experience/event: My experience of the group project was mixed, it was positive because I learned to develop skills such as coping mechanisms, (LIST SOME SKILLS & THEORIES) . It was negative because some groupo members were confrontational. Example is Some group members were annoyed at the non-attendance of some group members and was being very rude, with personal insults . Step 2 – Feelings Consider what you were thinking and how you felt before the experience. How did you feel during the experience? How did you feel after the experience? This is another short descriptive step, rather than being analytical. Before this experience, my previous experience of taking part in group projects had a short time limit and so it was important that all group members assigned specific roles with deadlines set. I therefore thought that this experience would be similar, but it was not because there were different personalities, with different approaches. were short and my view on the group members were favourable. However, l thought that the group members were non-empathetic, judgemental to the other group members. At that time, I felt uncomfortable because I liked the group members who the comments were about. used were offensive. I felt after the experience upset at the inconsideration of some group members. I was aware that I had to use my emotional resilience by listening, not getting involved or contributing to this negative situation. I also had to develop my emotional resilience because I thought that this occasion may arise again in this project. The danger of denying emotions in our work | BASW England 80-20 Campaign’s latest news and resources Here you will find the latest news, information and resources from the ongoing BASW England 80-20 Campaign to improve working conditions for social workers and drive better outcomes for children Step 3 – Evaluation Evaluation looks objectively at positive aspects of the experience. Describe key elements that went particularly well. The positive aspects of the project are my contribution to the successful outcome of the project. I delivered my notes on time, I contributed to the development of the project. I stayed with the project to the end. The key elements are taking my personal time to research the project community to better understand their needs. I learned about a community whose lives were different to my own Step 4 – Analysis Analysis attempts to explain why the experience was positive and should form the largest section of your reflection. Take into account points made in the previous steps and identify any factors which helped you . previous experiences, carrying out research or consulting with others. Consider your role in the experience and how you contributed to the success of this experience? The experience was positive because I learned the skill to keep my discipline for a project that required months to take part in. I learned of my self-worth, that my contribution to the project is just as important and just as valid as any other group member. I learned that I can deal with group members who were difficult to work with Step 5 – Conclusion Focus on what you have learned. Are there any skills you developed as a result of the experience? If so, how would you apply them in future experiences or situations? Are there areas of knowledge or skills you now need to develop from this positive experience? Is there anything you would do differently in the future? Try to give specific examples. What I would do differently is to be more flexible and adaptable in my interaction with group members. I learned of group dynamics and how personalities in group are different to those group members outside of the project. I learned how I personally deal with group tensions, by not taking it personally. As a result of this I learned that I have emotional resilience (use Daniel Goleman ‘Emotional Intelligence’ quote). I learned thst I use coping mechanism to deal with stressful situations. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO SOCIAL WORK BECAUSE I will have cases of stressful situations, an example is an abusive partner who does not recognise how the behaviour has an impact on others. Step 6 – Action Plan What specific actions can you now take to build on your knowledge or skills? You could include any training that would benefit you (formal or otherwise), as well as identifying sources of information or support (people or resources) Action plan – To do my own personal research on different personalities and personality traits and how to deal with them in confrontational situations. How do you answer what is your role in your project? Therefore, these two questions are what you should answer: Explain how you personally contributed to the project’s success, ideally with specific achievements that were directly linked to your contribution. And don’t forget to explain what a personal take away was.
