The electronic health record (EHR) is one of the most significant innovations introduced in healthcare over the past several decades. Today almost all healthcare providers are using computerization to share patient data and information across facilities locally, nationally and, eventually, internationally. Although there is concern about how to establish a nationwide interoperable system, and many issues still need to be resolved related to EHR implementation and adoption, the long-term benefits to organizations, healthcare providers, patients, and consumers cannot be ignored. This chapter explores the evolving nature of the EHR to include essential components and functions, how these components are used in the clinical setting, and the benefits related to cost, access, quality, safety, and efficiency of care. A discussion of key issues that influence the implementation and adoption of these systems and future directions concludes this chapter.
Required information to be included on the slides and the speaker notes are the following.
1. Synopsis of the topic selected
2. Indications for use and/or history
3. Impact on health care
4. Pros and cons
5. Future use
Submit one copy to the drop box provided in the week the assignment is due and another to the discussion thread in the following week to be shared with the class.
The PPT should be 12 – 15 slides, not including the title or reference slide at the end) and include at least three professional references in APA format.
The format of the PowerPoint will be slightly different for this online course. The speaker notes (space below the slide), which traditionally contain prompts or cues for the speaker, will be used in a more formal way for this assignment. In the speaker notes space, you will write additional details or explanations in paragraph form with formal APA writing guidelines and in text citations. This exercise should help you in two ways. First, it will prevent the slides from being overcrowded and allow you to present material in a business or educational style. Secondly, formal speaker notes will illustrate that you have a grasp of the topic and will serve as a writing exercise. The speaker notes can be accessed on the top tool bar….going to “View” and selecting “Notes” and typing in that area.
