: Essay 3 will be a Digital Presentation (7 slide PowerPoint) Creating a presentation keeps the
audience in mind, an important consideration for a writer. This assignment will also help to reinforce the
elements of an essay we have been learning about: Thesis, Reasons, Evidence, Analysis & Conclusion,
while also giving you practice framing and citing quotes.
You will write about one of the plays we read and discussed: “Post-its” OR “Trifles.”The discussion board
from last week has many topics and prompts from which to choose. Look over the list of topic ideas
inside the discussion board link.
Here are possible approaches:
• You can write about ONE literary element, for example make an argument about an important
symbol within one of the plays. Be sure your thesis states what the symbol represents.
• Or, you can apply a lens and perhaps you will write about what, specifically, one of the plays is
saying about gender.
Length: 7 Slides (Slides should be uncluttered – not too much text – and visually interesting – Use eyecatching images that convey information)
Presentation Structure:
SLIDE 1 – THESIS Statement: one sentence that makes a debatable claim about one of the plays (such
as ONE literary element – character, theme, symbol, setting – OR analyzes the story using a literary lens,
such as Feminist, Marxist, Psychological)
SLIDE 2 – REASON #1 & QUOTE: State one reason WHY your thesis is true. Then provide a quote
from the play to support your reason. (Make sure it is introduced/blended into sentence and cited).
SLIDE 3 – EXPLAIN the quote. What is important about the portion of text that you excerpted. What
does it show/reveal about the character or theme or a symbol in the story (or whatever topic you chose for
your thesis). Remember the PPT “This Shows That” and develop ideas around quote.
SLIDE 4 – REASON #2 & QUOTE: State another reason WHY your thesis is true. Then provide a quote
from the play to support your reason. (Make sure it is introduced/blended into sentence and cited).
SLIDE 5 – EXPLAIN the quote. What is important about the portion of text that you excerpted. What
does it show/reveal about the character or theme or a symbol in the story (or whatever topic you chose for
your thesis). Remember the PPT “This Shows That” and develop ideas around quote.
SLIDE 6 -CONCLUSION – Leave the reader with some final things to think about. To develop/go deeper
with ideas/analysis of your main claim/thesis, answer the following questions: So what? who cares? Why
does it matter? Convey what is important about your thesis.
SLIDE 7 – WORKS CITED – Your final slide should include a complete citation for the source you
quoted. ** NO OUTSIDE SOURCES should be used for this assignment. The ideas must be your
own. Your only source should be the one drama you are analyzing and writing about.
