Using “The Classical Model of Argument” as your guide, write a research essay that uses your critical powers to make an argument based on two major readings, both of them entitled the Coming of John, the first a chapter from The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois and the second, inspired by DuBois, a chapter from Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, a living civil-rights lawyer and the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. You will need to support your argument using two to four other sources from Black in America. Your argument should be based on a thesis that tries to answer a question growing out of one of the ideas or themes you see in your reading of DuBois and Stevenson: justice, redemption, punishment, love, learning, equality, truth, conflict, home.
