The authors defines reasoning as to any process whereby we apply available information such as evidence or principles to a question, issue, or dilemma in the interest of reaching a conclusion (Williams & Arrigo 2012). In any conversation one would like to be heard. We conversate to build our social skills and knowledge. We debate and argue to express our point of view. In the readings there are two basic types of reasonings. One, is theoretical reasoning it involves deciding what we should ought to believe. We are not figuring out what we should do in a given situation, but attempting to reach conclusions about morally responsible beliefs. Second, is practical reasoning, it involves deciding what we should or ought to do. We involve ourselves in practical reasoning anytime we deliberate an action. Is what guides our actions.
Capacity to reason is not about doing the right thing, it is about doing the right thing for the right reasons (Williams & Arrigo 2012). For example, my parents are elderly and need help going to their doctor’s appointments because they can no longer drive. I am going to offer my help to my parents, not only because they are my parents, but because I care and love them. I don’t want them to get into a traffic accident. If I can offer my time then I’m going to make every effort that they get to their appointments safely.
Write a paper on Critical thinking that requires knowledge, skills, tools and a good bit of critical reflection. The capacity to reason operate in critical thinking is one must use mental process to analyze. As the authors discuss it is the process by which we actively use our innate capacity for rational thought to make good choices or decisions, as well as to justify and carefully assess beliefs, principles, laws, policies and the like.
I believe one cannot have critical thinking without reasoning. One analyzes to make the right decisions and think thoroughly the repercussions. As my example, of helping out my parents with their doctor appointments. I know my parents need my help and without it, they cannot get to their appointment for their health. Yes I may be taking time away from my job, however, I need to be there for my parents. I do strongly believe that one cannot critical think without reasoning.
