They were all first-generation immigrants who founded companies, started traditions, composed songs, held political office, introduced certain foods and beverages, appreciated nature, music, art, etc. The speaker develops the concept that throughout the history of the United States, immigrants have always been thought of as “the other.” Immigrants have been treated poorly and, yet, are needed for their labor and contributions to the United States.
