Topic: Check out these two videos: “Todavia” [“Still”], by Krudas Cubensi (https://youtu.be/7ll86rnwy2k) “Pa’l Norte” [“Northwards”], by Calle 13 (video https://youtu.be/SBYO1ZfxxSM, music with English subtitles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZGbf7kAYtY&t=64s) While answering the questions, think of the music, the lyrics AND the videos: Using De Certeau’s concepts of space, place, frontier and spatial delinquency, explain how human movement is articulated in one of these songs. What perspective of migration is it “presenting” (articulating)? How do these perspectives complement or counter media discourse on migration to the US or Europe? If you have any questions, write to me, do not ask a classmate. Deadline: The paper will be submitted on blackboard before our April 28th class No papers will be accepted afterwards, even if sent via e-mail. If you are going to have a problem meeting this deadline, write to me at least 48 hours before the deadline. Academic Integrity (QUITE IMPORTANT): Re-read the Academic Integrity Code, and make sure that you understand what Plagiarism and Unauthorized Collaboration entail. Any text or ideas taken from a website, book, or article, and not properly acknowledged is plagiarism, independent of your intention, or whether you “forgot” to acknowledge sources. The penalty for plagiarism, as indicated in the Academic Integrity Code, is an F (even if it is “only” a sentence, quantity of material does not affect plagiarism). If you are going to paraphrase a source, indicate clearly in the text when you are beginning to do so. Apparently, for some schools this is not important. In this class, though, it is essential to be clear about when you are using other people’s ideas or words. So, even if it is a website, you need to make clear in your text where you start paraphrasing and where you end. Format and Requirements: Margins (under page layout) should be 1 inch on every side. Font type: Times New Roman, size 12. The paper will have to be at least 3 full (=complete) pages long, plus another page with a list of works that you have used to produce it, if you have used anything else. You are not required to use sources, but if you do, make sure you acknowledge them. A full page, for this class at least means a page that is full of words from top to bottom. Hopefully, they make sense ? Things to Pay Attention to: Your “ideal” reader will be someone educated, but not in our class. Before you start using terms such as symbol, boundary and interpretation, briefly introduce De Certeau’s use of those words. Once again, they are not the same as everyday use. You are supposed to work on this paper by yourself, not in groups. If you have any questions, write to me. In the “Works Cited” section (does not count towards the three pages), if you use any sources other than De Certeau and the songs you are analyzing, you must provide enough information about them so that your reader can find the source if they want to. http://easybib.com/
