Description: You will write a 5-6-page art analysis essay. The art analysis essay requires you apply skills from previous modules and Chapter 11 “Analyzing Texts.” Your art analysis requires a minimum of 3 outside sources. The goal for your analysis is to argue a particular way of seeing or thinking about your art. For the purposes of this assignment, your art is considered a written or visual text.

The Art Speaks assignment will:

Provide practice in writing clear, coherent, effective essays for multiple purposes and audiences according to commonly accepted standards of usage and mechanics.
Develop ideas and clear insights to provoke creative and critical thinking.
Offer students opportunities to develop and refine writing skills through revision.
Teach research skills to responsibly evaluate and ethically incorporate information.

“Art Speaks” Essay Expectations:

Identify a piece of art (no love songs/ poems) See “How to Choose Art”
Examine the significance of the art
Examine why the art should matter to you and to your readers
Anchor your analysis with a thesis statement
Have a title that previews your essay’s thesis
Reference the art and its creator/s in the Introduction Section and
Employ descriptive techniques for visual art. Imagine your readers have not seen the art you have chosen to analyze. Take the time to describe your chosen visual art for your readers. By providing a description, your readers will have a sense of what you analyze.
Employ summary for written art. Imagine your readers have not heard the lyrics or read the poem you analyze. Take the time to summarize the main subject of the written art and its purpose. If you have chosen a song, you can also describe what the song sounds like. By providing a summary, your readers will have a sense of what you analyze.
Utilize 3 credible sources minimum/ 4 credible sources maximum (outside sources are not required. Outside sources might be biographical information on the artist; historical, social, or political context; or articles written about your visual art text like the (NPR Peanuts article (Links to an external site.))
Interviews are NOT permitted for this essay
Show evidence of editing for word choice, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Uses proper MLA 9 formatting in all aspects of the written essay
Include a Works Cited page
Be completed in 5-6 pages
