Write a paper discussing on the Hybrid Exchange between European and Indian Traditional Cooking.
Analysis: The paper should utilize a diversity of sources, which include primary and secondary materials. For instance, if you are focusing on using a historically oriented film, novel, monument, object, painting or primary source text (speech, political writings, memoir, etc.), you should also incorporate the use of historical secondary sources (such as journal articles, academic histories, etc.). These may include, if they are relevant to your topic, texts that we have also read in class. Depending on your topic, you may also wish to use non-traditional, unpublished sources (such as oral histories in the forms of interviews), song lyrics or electronic sources, such as newspaper websites.
Citations: As we are dealing with an independent research paper here, note citations either as footnotes on the bottom of the page or endnotes at the end of document. Citations should follow the Chicago Manual of Style or the Turabian guide. When in doubt about citations, it may be useful to look at the endnotes/bibliography in one of the texts you are citing as a guide for writing up your bibliography or footnotes.
Remember to cite whatever sources you are using even if you are only paraphrasing them in your critique and try to be as detail-oriented as possible (for instance cite particular page numbers of a text rather than only the text by name itself). When citing electronic sources, provide the entire url address in the footnote/endnote.
When dealing with films be clear in establishing the specific scene you are referencing with attention to detail, especially when quoting dialogue.
Everything you refer to in the body of the paper should be included in your bibliography at the end. In addition, materials cited in your bibliography should have been used earlier in the text of the paper, particularly if they influenced your argument and conclusions, even if in passing in a footnote.
When you have repeated citations by the same author and text in a row, you should use the Latin ibid., which is a short hand method to refer to “the same place.” Similarly, idem can be used for the same author but for a different book.
Structure: Focus on having a tight and clear introductory paragraph where you establish your argument. The body of the essay should provide examples/evidence to support your thesis and/or question the arguments of those authors you may challenge/critique. The conclusion is a place where you can bring up further questions or suggest implications of your research which go beyond the bounds of the paper. It should not bring in new supporting material, however.
Be discriminating of the materials/sources you use and the topic you want to address. For those of you working on films or literary works, focus on a specific theme/scene/set of characters to explore rather than ambitiously tackling the whole work – this will help you structure your paper and you will actually have much more to write about then you realized!
