An article critique evaluates an article published in an academic journal. A good critique tells the reader what point the article is trying to make and how convincingly it makes this point. Writing an article critique achieves these main purposes for students: 1) it provides them with an understanding of the information contained in the article, 2) it provides an opportunity for them to apply and develop critical thinking skills, and 3) it helps them improve their own writing skills.
There are a number of important steps involved in writing a critique. Exercise care in choosing an article. When students have selected and read their article carefully, they may begin to write their critique, which should cover the following areas: 1) thesis, 2) methods, 3) evidence, and 4) evaluation.
