Discussion Forum on Chapter 9, Virtue Theory
First, review the lists of moral and nonmoral virtues on p. 136. Remember that some virtues in one category could also fit into the other category. And remember that virtues are traits of character, of who one is.
Recall example on p. 118, in Chapter 8, of the two soldiers who attempt do the same thing; one succeeds and the other fails.
In terms of Virtue Theory, do you think they share some virtues? If so, which ones, and why? In terms of Virtue Theory should we judge the two soldiers equal in ethical terms, or not? Be sure to explain your answers.
On pages 144- 145, the authors of our book note that Virtue Theory criticizes other ethical theories because they neglect the development of character. So now recall the Happiness Machine: for Virtue Ethics, can one develop character in experiences in the machine? Be sure to explain your answer.
