*You may submit your lab report with a partner or
individually on Canvas by 11:59 p.m. on the due date. You will be submitting a full lab report with
Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. A checklist from A Short Guide to Writing
About Biology by Jan A. Pechenik is included below to help guide you in what
should be included in each section.
1. Calculate the average
reaction times for each reflex recorded.
·
You can represent
these data as a table (Table 1) and place the table at the end of the paper.
·
The table number
and title should be placed above the table and should include the subject group tested. The sample size for each test and a brief description
of the procedure should be included in title.
The table should appear at the end of the paper but cited in the text of
the results section.
2 You are responsible
for writing a complete lab report (Abstract
through Discussion).
Abstract—a brief paragraph (without any citations)
summarizing the project. The best
way to construct the abstract is to take a sentence or two from each paper
section and compile it into a clear, concise paragraph.
Introduction—a brief introduction that includes a
clear statement of the hypotheses being tested (for reflex lab 1 and
reflex lab 2). Provide some context
for the study by incorporating some information obtained from your lecture
notes or textbook and literature articles.
You should find at least one primary journal article about visual
and auditory reflexes and one
article about reaction times for color that you can incorporate into your
introduction. (So 2 articles minimum.)
Methods—written in the past tense as you are
explaining procedures that have already been performed. Be sure to include a brief description
of the test subjects for the study (approximate age range and genders of
cohort), and the software used to collect and analyze the data. You do not need to repeat each step
indicated in the Labscribe instructions, but rather an overview in your
own words of the methods conducted.
Results—you should present the average reflex times
in tabular form. (See instructions
in #1). Be sure to refer to the table
in the text of the results section.
The actual table should be placed at the end of the paper. You
are to state your results (e.g. trends in the data) in this section
without providing explanations for those results. Explanations for the results belong in
the discussion section.
Discussion—include whether or not your results
agree with your expectations/hypotheses.
If they agree, summarize your conclusions and explain what your
results mean (e.g. if the reaction time is longer provide an explanation
as to why). If they do not agree,
include possible explanations for your results. You should also indicate if your results
agree or contradict the findings of the articles you used in the
introduction. Finally, suggest (in
2-3 sentences) some possible improvements for this exercise or other
things that could be investigated next (future directions in this area).
Literature Cited—you have to cite at
least two outside sources for this report; you should also cite your
textbook for any background information you obtained from it and used in
your report.
[You report should include a title, your name, the name of
your partner, the date and your lab instructor’s name wither as a separate
title page or at the top of the page in which the text of your report
begins. The paper should be roughly 3-4
pages written text, and your table (at the end).
