Reflect on Pan′s Labyrinth and its incorporation of folktale motifs and elements from classical mythology. You can focus on any perspective that strikes you as you watch the film. You could, for example, discuss how Ofelia and/or Mercedes fulfill the role(s) of hero in place of a male protagonist. If you choose this route, you may want to focus on the elements of the folktale pattern of the Quest. What role does the Captain play – is he the thoroughly evil villain? and Ofelia′s mother? How would you characterize the Faun? Does his depiction or those of the fairies match what you have seen in artistic interpretations of classical myths, or is it a combination or amalgamation of other classical themes in a new way? What is the role of fairytales or myths for Ofelia – are they a source of diversion, comfort, and/or a panacea for the difficulties she faces? How does myth help Ofelia make sense of her life? Does Ofelia have a counterpart or counterparts in classical mythology?
