Students are expected to write a 3-page literary criticism essay on a poem, story, or play that is
included among the readings in the text, The Norton Introduction to Literature, Shorter 13th
edition, edited by Kelly Mays. Students do not have to select a reading that is covered among the
readings in the class, but students should not select a topic that is addressed in the sample papers
included in the book. Please feel free to ask me any questions and to clear topics in advance.
Please review the introductions to each of the three main sections (Fiction, Poetry, and Drama)
as well as Writing about Fiction, Writing about Poetry, and Writing about Drama sections that
will offer some excellent advice and instruction and will provide sample of literary criticism
essays. Also, part 4 of the text “Writing About Literature” can be of assistance to you in this process
