The paper should thoroughly investigate an ethical issue currently facing the criminal legal
system. For the purposes of this assignment, an ethical issue is one involving a policy or
practice in criminal justice about which there is substantive professional and academic debate
over whether it is morally right or wrong. For example, legalization of marijuana, search and
seizure, plea bargaining, and capital punishment represent ethical issues. Students should
present relevant substantive data on the nature and extent of the problem. However, the
focus of the discussion should be the exploration and critical analysis of arguments that
support or oppose the phenomenon on the ethical grounds. Students should read scholarship to understand why they advocate or oppose a particular position on the subject. Student
papers should examine the issue from all sides, not just the side they support. Based upon this
research the instructor then expects students to reach a conclusion in favor of a particular
ethical position and discuss their reasons for choosing that position. The primary sources for these papers should be scholarly books and articles from academic journals. Students may not use their textbooks as sources for these projects.
Wikipedia is not an acceptable source or reference. Papers should cite a minimum of seven
academic sources. However, students should examine as much relevant material as possible in
any sources.
