Food Policy Research Brief

Words: 1136
Pages: 5
Subject: Uncategorized

This assignment consists of two parts: Proposal and Presentation

Part 1: Proposal
• For the proposal, you will need to begin initial research on your project.
• Plan on creating an outline for yourself, and having your resources ready so that the following week, creating the presentation is not as overwhelming.
• In this Google spreadsheet, list the following:
o Your name
o Topic of your research brief
o Key learning points (1-2 short sentences for each):
 Background information/origin of the problem
 Local concerns and impact (must be community specific: South Bronx, East Harlem etc.)
 Existing efforts to address the topic
o Sources you used to come up with the information above
 You should cite (AMA style citation) at least 10 academic sources (Google Scholar, Hunter’s Database, and PubMed) and 4 secondary sources (New York Times, NPR, any .gov websites, if you’re unsure let us know).

• For ALL ACADEMIC SOURCES, you must download and find the FULL study — you cannot use only the abstract.

• For ALL SECONDARY SOURCES, you must read this article in full — see HERE.

• Be prepared for the professor to ask to see all academic studies.

• Topics are on a first-come, first-serve basis. No topic can be duplicated. If you’re really passionate about your topic, do the research and submit as soon as possible!
• It is your responsibility to check if a topic has already been chosen by a different student. If that is the case, choose another topic you are interested in. DO NOT DELETE YOUR CLASSMATE’S ENTRIES ON THE SPREADSHEET!
• If there is an issue with your topic, the TA will be reaching out via email immediately after the submission deadline on Sunday 12/12.
• This Google spreadsheet submission is worth 10 points of the entire assignment.

Part 2: Presentation
• After outlining your project on the google spreadsheet, begin creating your presentation.
• Your goal is to be brief but thorough so that anyone could watch your presentation and understand it.
• Imagine you will be presenting this topic to someone who does not know anything about food policy or the NYC community affected by the issue.
• Your presentation must include the following elements:
o Title Slide: Introduce yourself and the topic, to give the viewers an overview of what problem is being addressed.
o Background: Set the scene of the problem you will be addressing. Introduce the setting and community affected.
 Answer the initial questions: who, what, where, how, why
 What is the cause of the problem? Where is the origin of the problem?
• Do the research: the causes of the problem are not always food-related. The causes can be financial, educational, political, etc.
o Local Concerns and Impact: You will be discussing how this concern impacts New York City and the specific community affected.
 What do residents think of the problem/topic?
 What do residents want policymakers to do to address this problem?
 How many residents are affected by this problem, and to what extent?
 Citing statistics as well as anecdotal evidence (experiences told by New Yorkers themselves) gives the audience a sense of how severe the issue is.
o Policies and Efforts in Place: Explore the work that has already been done to address the problem, and give credit to the groups/people who did this work.
 This includes both legislative policies that are in place in NYC, as well as community service based efforts.
 How successful have these efforts been? Do residents appreciate these efforts?
o References:
 Citations should be in AMA Style.
 You should, again, cite at least 20 academic sources (Google Scholar, Hunter’s Database, and PubMed) and 4 secondary sources (New York Times, NPR, any .gov websites, if you’re unsure let us know)
• Your job is to search through all the information out there regarding the problem and its prevalence in New York City and in the specific underserved and/or marginalized community chosen. You must select information that best supports your brief. This information should clearly and directly support the claims in your presentation.
• This presentation brief is worth 90 points of the entire assignment.

Presentation Formatting:
• Every one of these formatting requirements must be met. If not, points will be automatically deducted:
o We suggest that you create your presentation in PowerPoint or Google Slides.
o You need to create a presentation that is a minimum of 5 minutes long, and a maximum of 6.5 minutes long.
 If you go over 6.5 minutes, you will lose 5 points automatically.
 You MUST practice before you record your presentation.
o Your presentation should be visually appealing and engaging for the audience.
 Include images, diagrams, and/or graphs to tell your story, not just words.
• There are plenty of resources for free images, such as Unsplash, Pexels, and freepik.
 Some tips on creating a visually appealing presentation:
• Use one or two large images on a slide instead of several small images
• 70% of your slides should have an image, photo, or graphic
• Images should be arranged vertically or horizontally, not scattered.
o All slides should be the same style (to do this easily, use a template)
 Color and style of all slides should be standardized.
 All text, including headlines and body, should have the same font.
• Select a single sans-serif font such as Arial or Helvetica.
• Avoid serif fonts such as Times New Roman or Palatino, because these fonts can be difficult to read.
• Font size should be at least 24pt.
 Slides should be clean and uncluttered.
• Leave empty space around the text and graphical images.
• For slides with bullet points, use the 6 x 6 Rule: one thought per line, no more than 6 words per line, no more than 6 lines per slide.
• Avoid long sentences and paragraphs, and limit punctuation marks
• Label each slide clearly so the audience knows what they’re looking at.
• You need to write a separate script to read while recording. IF YOU READ DIRECTLY OFF YOUR SLIDES, YOU WILL LOSE 10 POINTS. Reading off your slides is a sign of very poor presentation skills.
• These presentation formatting tips can be used on all kinds of presentations. Following these guidelines will make sure all of your presentations are clear and engaging.

Uploading your Presentation:
• After creating the slides and writing the script, you will need to upload them to VoiceThread on Blackboard. VoiceThread allows you to record your voice over each slide.

The area i chose is Brooklyn flatbush. And the topic is How can we promote healthy environment looking at restaurant warning Labels.
