Observe standard rules of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Underline or italicize play titles.
Proofread your work carefully.
1. Identify: Always identify play, playwright (or the equivalent), producing theatre and date
you viewed the performance. This should be a couple of sentences.
2. Describe: Give a brief description of the play –a paragraph at most- in other words,
what is the play about in a general sense? Please give your own description. Do not copy
a synopsis. It is important how you describe the theatre production you viewed.
3. Statement of Meaning: After the first two, you should write a “statement of meaning”
paragraph/s. This should be something that was meaningful to you or a positive moment,
idea, etc. in the production (it can be anything you want). Choose something that made
you think, reflect or have an emotion or feeling in some meaningful way. Regardless of
how you felt about the overall theatrical production find something meaningful to discuss
about the production. The “statement of meaning” should be at least a full and complete
paragraph but generally is a couple of paragraphs. Be thorough and use details from the
production you watched and your feeling of it.
4. Social Relevance: After your “statement of meaning” you should next write a few full
and complete paragraphs on some aspect/moment in the production that connected to
some idea/theme/concept/issue that is relevant to society today. Let’s call it a “social
relevance” statement. In particular, what connections to society was this production
making to our society (if any)? If it wasn’t overtly making any, were there any that could
be interpreted? Give a specific example of something that was being presented and how it
was being connected to the world we live in today. Essentially, is/was there something in
the play/production that made it relevant or addressed the world you currently live in?
Did the production talk about something that is in the news (either specifically or loosely),
or something else that is thematic in our world. Why? And more importantly, what did
you think about this connection? Did it make sense? Were you confused? Again, this can
be anything but please be specific and use details. This “social relevance” statement
should be at least a couple of full and complete paragraphs.
6. The Theatre Experience: Finally, after your “social relevance” paragraphs, you should
spend some time at the end of your paper talking about the “theatre experience”.
Essentially, what did you think about watching the theatrical production on a computer/tv
as opposed to being in the space with the actors? What was the space (the theater) like?
Was it big or small? Intimate or cold? Did you experience venue/space in your viewing
