Research Proposal Assignment
As an epidemiologist, your team has been asked by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to
design a study with a goal to better understand the
relationship between diet and stroke.
Part 1. Write a research proposal to address this request.
Consider how you might study this question within your
own discipline (e.g. health behavior, health policy &
administration). Also consider the final chapters covered
around evaluation and policy. Choose one of the study
designs described in this course – Randomized Controlled
Trial, Cohort, Case-Control, or Cross-Sectional. Include
the following in your proposal:
a. Significance – describe what the health problem is
and why it is important to study
b. Aims – State the hypothesis/objective(s) that you wish
to accomplish with your study
c. Study design and approach – describe the design you
chose, and what you will do in your specific study.
Include what your exposure(s) and outcome(s) of
interest are.
d. Your population of interest – describe who your
participants are and how you will recruit them to take
part in your study
e. Data you will collect – describe what you will measure
for exposures, outcomes, and other variables of
interest and how you will collect the information from
your participants.
The proposal should be written in word; 10 pages
maximum, double-spaced, 11 point Arial font with 1 inch
margins. All sources should be cited in APA format using
in-text citation and a reference page.
Part 2. Create a 15-minute presentation of your proposed
study. Include information on why you chose your study
design over the others. There is no specific requirement
on the presentation style other than all group members
should participate. Get creative!
