Book: Grace Will Lead Us Home
Several of the survivors and victims’ families of the Charleston mass shooting offered forgiveness to the killer days after the massacre. Yet Hawes’ book seems to make it clear that the journey toward healing didn’t end with these words. In fact, other family members expressed anger at the expression of forgiveness, and even for those who forgave, healing was a far more complicated process, one that had numerous ups and downs and unexpected challenges.
Based on what you’ve read so for, what are some of the specific challenges that the survivors and family members faced in the aftermath of the shooting (from hearings to funerals to beyond the funerals)? You might highlight 1-2 individuals in your response, though keep in mind that everyone responded differently. Were you surprised to see so many complications and so many different approaches emerge? Why or why not?
