TOPIC : The Year of Climate Change and Covid-19: Compounding Disasters in Asia
The past 18 months have demonstrated too clearly the complexities of managing compounding
disasters or “disasters within a disaster”. The paper referenced below describes how vulnerable
communities in South Asian countries have faced devastating impact from the twin challenges
of ongoing climate-related events and the Covid-19 pandemic.
You are a disaster researcher and you have been invited to submit a report at a session of the
Natural Disasters Asia Exhibition and Conference. The theme of your report relates to the
challenges that compounding disasters create for disaster preparedness planning and response
in developing Asian nations.
You will choose ONE (1) country from the South Asia region and research how a community
in that country was affected by the compounding disasters of Covid-19 and climate change,
particularly in relation to the agriculture and food security.
You should gather your data from reports and studies from academic sources, “think tanks”,
research organisations and non-profit organisations involved in areas of development and
disaster relief, e.g. Asian Development Bank, United Nations, and its agencies such as the
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate
Centre. Try to limit how much content you use from the news media, except for well-known
and reputed traditional media (newspapers and magazines). Provide a reference list.
