Hi! This take-home final exam requires you to engage each of the following questions/topics in a concise 4-5 page essay (ONE ESSAY TOTAL), backing up your points with reference to specific examples. You may draw on material presented in lectures, readings, films and/or class discussions. As you will see (and in the spirit of giving you a good measure of choice and control over the direction your answers take), these questions give you a lot of flexibility in orienting your essays and choosing which of the topics we’ve covered to incorporate or reference.
Please note, I have attached class powerpoints AND readings to this order, along with the instructions & questions.
This is my last semester, so this paper is really important to me !- the professor said the only sources should be material presented in lectures, readings, films and/or class discussions. So I will put everything attached to this.
Also i uploaded the course outline so you can take a look at the readings – if you need any I can send them to you!
QUESTION:
One of the prominent themes that we have considered at various points in the course has gathered around the issue of “authenticity,” “appropriation,” “imitation,” “originality” and/or “hybridity” in the way people have engaged with popular culture or in cultural debate in 20th century Africa. With specific reference to at least one of our topical sessions for the course, develop your own concluding thoughts around this theme. What is going on in various cases when Africans have developed cultural practices around images, icons, objects or practices often seen to be “originally” from elsewhere? In relation to the terms listed above, what do you see as the best framework for understanding these engagements?
