OPTION 1
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels examine in the Manifesto of the Communist Party such topics as class struggles in that bourgeois and proletarians seek to control the means or instruments (including labor) and modes of production. One may argue that the proletariat, the working class, is merely a framework/instrument (of exploitation or enslavement) in the hands of the bourgeoisie (also identified as modern capitalism). Marx and Engels point out, for instance, that “the bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionizing the instruments of production, and thereby, the relations of production, and with them the whole relations of society” (CDC 426).
• Present the authors of the manifesto and the sociopolitical context surrounding this document.
• Do you agree or disagree (or in-between) with the above argument concerning social relations?
• Discuss the formation and development of each class as explored in the Manifesto.
• Reflect on how the recent pandemic (COVID-19) has revealed, at least, both economic struggles and social inequalities of many societies? Provide current examples of your choice that illustrate any of these struggles.
