Sleep and depression are closely related. Poor sleep is likely to affect the quality of life one has. Problems of depression are likely to start when one starts experiencing insomnia problems. Lack of sleep can be caused by drug and substance use, diseases, sleeping disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea, and aging. People of the higher age brackets are more likely to lack sleep because of their medication or other medication health-related problems. When a person starts experiencing sleep loss, it is crucial to seek medical treatment as soon as possible to avoid severe consequences like depression, which can lead to suicide or permanent health conditions.
Sleep deprivation can have short-term and long-term effects on your health; One may experience a lack of alertness in their daily schedule, like missing school or classes and missing lunch periods. Lacking alertness may impact how your day will take shape and how you will feel and may have dire consequences if not well dealt with. Another effect is excessive daytime sleeping to cater for the sleep time you miss during the day, and as a result, one may have to cancel necessary plans for the day. Also, it affects the relationship status with the people around you. Insufficient sleep can make you feel moody, and one is prone to cause conflicts with others; as a result, other people may exclude themselves from you to avoid your moody conditions.
The quality of life one leads likely to derivate be because one may become less concerned with regular daily activities like exercising, eating, and enjoying friends’ company. In addition, it can affect one’s appearance by developing wrinkles prematurely and dark circles in the region of your eyes (Killgore, 2010). Other serious health effects include the potential development of chronic health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, obesity, and reduced immune function. These are long-term effects, and some are irreversible
Depression is a mental health condition rampant among teenagers and students in general and mostly goes unnoticed and can have profound effects. It affects the student’s self-esteem such that they regard themselves as lowly and could affect how this particular student behaves around other students. They always feel low about themselves, and mostly, they end up not opening up their issues to others, and they become introverts (Khemka et al., 2020). The student can also become easily enraged or irritable and could have problems with the teachers such that they can cause fights with the teachers and often do not accept corrections. Depression can cause fatigue because it brings about sleeping disorders, and therefore the student will always feel the urge to sleep in class or even miss classes to sleep.
Concentration in class is bound to become minimal due to the lack of sleep and other effects. Due to this, the academic capability of these students will decline, with their results deteriorating every time because depression has caused a compromise on their ability to concentrate (Parveen, 2007). One of the direst consequences of depression is suicide. The depression levels could worsen if not noticed, and the student could feel the need to take away their life to end his suffering. The suicide can take place on the school premises or at home. Therefore, all stakeholders involved, like parents, guardians, teachers and friends, must take note of depression cases and help the affected before the worst happens.
Some of the ways to help students with depression include letting everybody be equipped with how to identify depression cases and how to deal with them. It is sad to note that even the teachers themselves do not know how to deal with depression cases in some schools. Let the students be taught the need to open-up on issues that affect them to their teachers or friends. Also, let the school have an effective and working guidance and counseling department to help. Teachers should develop a conducive environment between themselves and the students to encourage students to approach them quickly in case of any need they have. Negative strategies like punishment, mocking, and aggression should be avoided because they worsen the situation. If a student fails tests continuously, the teacher should take it upon himself to find out why. In case of any mistakes from the students, let the tutor talk to them calmly instead of mocking them or sending out negative, sarcastic comments in front of other students. Such behaviors may worsen the situation. Another way to combat depression among students is by encouraging them to shun drug and substance use and having strategies that discourage their use (Chen, 2020). Also, encourage the students to have proper nutrition and practice healthy behaviors like having enough sleep and exercising.
Some of the causes of sleep deprivation and depression include problems in family-like poverty and marital conflicts that affect a person mentally to the extent of overthinking it. It becomes so attached to the affected person that they end up deep in thoughts and emotions without getting any solution. Abuse like gender-based violence through actions like sexual abuse, physical abuse or emotional abuse can trigger depression and sleep disorders. Physical abuse through beatings from bullying or even relationship partners, sexual abuse through rape or sodomy can cause depression, especially when the affected person is adamant about talking to other people about what befell him. Certain medical conditions can alter an individual’s sleeping patterns to the extent that they lack a Discuss on sleep and depression
