Write a paper on “Are Entitlement Programs Creating a Culture of Dependency?” on pages 38-49. You will then write an op-ed or newspaper column in which you argue for one of the two positions. Writing an op-ed is a specific skill – You need to convey your ideas in very few words, and you need to make your argument engaging through the use of examples or quotes. An op-ed is a type of persuasive writing which can be more informal than standard academic writing. You may use informal expressions and metaphors, for example. Tone is important as well. You should be able to make your point without being disrespectful or insulting of those who disagree with you. (remember, however, that op-eds are NOT usually written in the first person but in the third person) In your submission, please indicate whether you wrote your op-ed for a secular or a religious audience and publication. ———————————————- As you write your op-ed, try to use at least three of the phrases on pp. 94-95.
