This week we are looking at simulation in nursing education. This is an important and growing phenomenon in nursing education. Currently in NY State 1 hour of simulation in the lab = 2 hours of actual clinical experience in the hospital. Additionally, programs can have > 50% of their “clinicals” being simulation in place of actual clinical in the hospital!
I would like for this week’s discussion for you to answer the following:
1.) What is your opinion of 1 hour in the sim lab equaling 2 hours in the clinical. (so the students would only have to do 4 hours of simulation in place of 8 hours in the hosptial)? Do you think this is appropriate? Why or why not? What are your concerns about this?
2.) What do you think about programs being able to have > 50% of their clinical experiences happening in the lab?
3.) If you were teaching in an on line program you would have to use on-line simulation programs. Do a search to see what options are out there and present what you find. Do you think these are good ways of teaching and do you think they are as valuable as actual clinical simulation in the lab? Why or why not?
