Jacob is the eldest of three sons. His father is a Franco-Ontarian and his mother was born and raised in Haiti. Jacob belongs to the middle class as his father is in the armed forces and his mother is a nurse. He spent the first five years of his life in Trenton and then moved to Orleans, where there is a large concentration of francophone population. His parents have always enrolled him in French-language schools, both at the elementary and secondary levels.
Before Jacob reached grade 12, his father was transferred to a posting in Alberta. Jacob was disappointed because he wanted to graduate alongside his friends. His parents persuaded him that moving to a new province would be an enriching experience. There were no French-language
schools in his new community, so Jacob had to finish his 12th grade in an English-language school. Fortunately, Jacob had the opportunity when he was younger to spend his vacations in summer camps participating in English-language immersion programs. Consequently, he was fluently bilingual albeit with a slight French accent.
Upon the family’s arrival in Alberta, Jacob’s parents were concerned for their eldest. Jacob constantly complained about his new school. He seemed to have difficulty fitting in although he was usually extroverted and had a good sense of humour. He seemed to retreat into his shell. Despite their concerns, Jacob’s parents decided not to force anything and to give him time.
The parents’ decision seemed to prove successful. After a few months, Jacob was adapting to this major life change. He now had new friends. He was no longer complaining about his school. After a while, however, problems began…
Jacob started to speak English at home with his two younger brothers. He answered more and more in English when his parents asked him questions, even though those questions were asked in French. When his parents tried to reprimand him gently asking him to speak in French at home, Jacob shouted that it didn’t matter anyway. Moreover, Jacob was seriously thinking of changing his mind about going to a French-speaking postsecondary institution.
Today, Jacob is torn between his desire to please his parents and preserve his culture and
language and his wish to follow his new anglophone friends.
