My research paper will be
about body image as it pertains to the demands for beauty by society. I will discuss
ways social media has influenced the way women feel about their bodies and how
it has led to a culture of women desiring or being addicted to surgical and
cosmetic procedures whether dental work, breast augmentation, Brazilian Butt
Lift, or “bleaching”. Unrealistic standards and low self-esteem have led
many women to backyard surgeons or to travel to non-board-certified surgeons in
countries such as Colombia who put them in grave danger. It has led others to
believe that they will only be beautiful if their skin is a certain shade, ignoring
the risks associated with abusing skin lightening creams. I will include
visuals of mortality rates for popular procedures, and percentages of deaths
related to backyard surgeons who are injecting women with non-medical materials
which have led to disfiguration. Perfection is unachievable and if women do not
love themselves, they will always be chasing the next “thing” to enhance their
looks. Because it is so dangerous and is
not long-lasting, women should explore natural alternatives that can prove to
be more effective in the long run while building confidence.
