From the Syllabus: “The final project is intended to encourage you to reflect upon the semester and produce a project that represents a broadened and diversified view of Appalachian music. There are two versions of the final project (“Lecture Recital” or “Program Notes”), but both versions of the project begin identically by curating a YouTube playlist of 5 songs by 5 different artists from 5 different genres, that could be described as Appalachian music. Your playlists must include at least one example that is bluegrass or old time. The final project should be individual work, but students are encouraged to consult with me outside of class (e.g. office hours) for guidance.”
Program Notes: For this option, you will submit a document that includes your 5 song YouTube playlist along with background of the respective artist(s) and selected song, and justification for how the genre, artist(s), and/or selected song is representative of or should be recognized as Appalachian music in a scholarly written format. It is expected that each written ‘program note’ will be 1-2 double spaced pages in length and will include working hyperlinks to the respective YouTube content. Additionally, it is expected that your project will include a comprehensive works cited page and will have limited spelling, grammar, and/or content errors. The total length of your document will be 8-12 double spaced pages long, Times New Roman 12 point font, and double spaced. Due via AsuLearn @ 12:00am EST on 4/25.
