Watch ‘the elephant man’ directed by David Lynch and answer questions based on movie
1. What types of NONVERBAL challenges would someone who looked like John Merrick present to a GROUP of people working together?
John was severely disfigured and most people in today’s world would not get to this point before receiving surgery etc. But, there are people with disfigurements ranging from severe acne ( which can be very tough for someone and very disabling; loss of a limb or disfigured hands that are very visible; and a host of other issues people have to live with.
What kinds of subliminal thoughts could we harbor about someone with these issues? For example, researchers already know that people think disabled people are LESS intelligent which is far from the truth.
2. Why do people usually assume the “ugly” person has committed the crime, or stole something at work, or is deceptive and not truthful? Find an example (research on Google) of where an unattractive person was discriminated in the workplace. Briefly analyze the case, and what solutions would you offer so this type of problem does not occur again?
3. The FACE can make 7,000 facial expressions, and these expressions help us relate and communicate with other people. (as well as helping us develop a strong self-esteem). Discuss some of the interpersonal limitations John Merrick faced because he could not communicate using his facial muscles.
4. Haptics is the study of TOUCH. Normally we don’t think about being touched etc. in the workplace unless it is something inappropriate etc. But, think of all the innocuous touching that goes on throughout the day at work or even in college. For example, people hug one another, we give little kisses to one another showing we are happy to see someone etc., we shake hands, we might lean over and our hand on someone’s shoulder just to make contact (and it means nothing bad etc. just a friendly connection ). Discuss the challenges someone like John Merrick (or anyone with issues related to looks etc.) faces regarding touching and being touched. Look up Haptics and briefly discuss the importance of human connection through touch.
5. What role can EMPATHY play when we are faced with someone like a John Merrick in our group? Be sure you watch the VIDEO posted in Classes.
