Gregory Crewdson’s Twilight & Beneath the Roses
Gregory Crewdson is an American photographer (Massachusetts native) known for taking elaborately staged, cinematic photographs that often seem like they are part of larger story. He typically shoots in small Massachusetts towns and uses deliberate lighting, costuming, and many other effects to produce the precise image that evokes a particular mood. Your assignment is to write short flash fiction story (1000 words) that is based on one of the images posted on Blackboard. Here are the basic rules:
Your story can take place either before or after the events in the image, but it must involve the image directly in some way.
Because Crewdson’s photographs often appear surreal in quality, don’t’ feel like your story has to be strictly “realistic.” Instead feel free to experiment with whatever genre conventions you want (e.g. straightforward drama, comedy, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, magical realism, etc.) That said, your story should, to at least some degree, make sense and include some major event that helps explain what’s going on in the image.
1000 words isn’t a lot of room to tell a full story, so be efficient with your language. Make every word count.
USE YOUR IMAGINATION! If the story isn’t fun or interesting for you to read, then it won’t be for everyone else either.
