TERM WORK: COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS PROJECT
Outline
Paper #2’s Purpose: Your two community-based interviewing experiences position you to write this research-based analysis paper. This 10-12 page paper has you review relevant literature, apply that explanatory knowledge frame to your experiences around both of your community-based interviews, and support conclusions about: a) particular communicative practices, and about b) the concepts invoked in analyzing them here.

Reflective Interview Reporting
(*Note: not your “process journal entries” written most weeks about class readings and discussions)
Write at least one entry reporting these four things about each of your two interview preps and experiences.
You’ll attach attach your second interview’s Reflection to Final Research-based Analysis Paper.
In each case they’ll help you support the claims you make in your papers themselves. Each entry will address the following categories:
· What were your goals?
· What happened?
· In what ways do you note your own “social position” (your own standpoint based on age, class, sexuality, race, gender, ability, etc.) playing a role in your perceptions, emotions, beliefs, or actions?
· What questions remain for you?

Project Background:
Based on assignments made and resources provided earlier in the course, you will have created a distinct interview protocol for each of your two assigned community interviews. Especially for this second paper, your interview questions should be designed to elicit information relevant to the concept(s) you’re most interested in applying and exploring via this paper #2’s analysis. For example, if you’d intended to explore and rely on Orbe’s co-cultural theory for this paper’s backbone, you’ll want to plan to ask your interviewees about their clients’ particular co-cultural communication strategies when interacting across power differences. Read and plan well ahead of time so you can tailor your interview protocols to suit the concept(s) that most interest you for this paper.

The Research-based Analysis Paper (#2) will have the following sections:
1. An introduction section that captures interest, establishes topic relevance, and forecasts the rest of the paper. Make your paper’s central purpose and organization clear to the reader here.
2. Your literature review section should utilize at least six pieces of refereed scholarship (can include refereed readings already assigned for class) to establish and explain the frame you’ve applied to analyze your learnings from your two interview experiences. This section should explain all terms and mechanisms needed to understand and apply your chosen concept(s). Once you’ve detailed those pieces of the concepts, be sure also to synthesize them into a coherent whole frame before moving on to apply that frame to explaining your interview experiences and learnings.
3. The next section applies the details of that conceptual frame to what you learned from your two interviews. In what specific ways did these cases align with or challenge the explanations and expectations offered by your chosen concepts? Through that “lens,” what did your two interview cases have in common, and where did they differ?
4. Next, evaluate two implications of your analysis. First, what can you conclude about the situation of the marginalized people served by your two interviewees? Be sure to note what the two groups’ situations have in common as well as what’s unique to each. Second, what can you conclude about the usefulness and validity of the concept(s) you used to frame and analyze these situations? In what ways was it a ‘sharp tool’ and in which ways a ‘dull’ one?
5. Finally, specify what this project has reinforced and/or changed about your beliefs, attitudes, and actions in the world, and with what current or anticipated consequences, both positive and negative. How is this intellectual exercise resonating with you personally, if at all?
Your paper will Honor APA or MLA style guidelines for crediting sources cited and must include a title page, reference page, and your second community interview’s questions protocol and reflection entry in order to be considered complete for grading.
As it accomplishes all sections described above, the paper must meet the following criteria:
ü Incorporate clear position statements clearly well-supported by the rest of the paper…
… about the communicative and other realities of these two marginalized groups;
… about qualities of the concept(s) you used to frame/analyze those practices and realities.
ü Show accurate knowledge of the concept(s) you used to frame and analyze these situations.
ü Correctly apply relevant conceptual knowledge to analyze your two groups’ communicative and other (institutional, structural, social, motivational, etc.) characteristics and realities. Refer to and cite accurately at least six refereed sources.
ü Synthesize (make connections among) insights gleaned from the various experiences and concepts discussed in the paper.
