About
The Renaissance is a period of art during the 15th and 16th centuries. The Italian Renaissance was centered in primarily Florence, Italy, and includes famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Botticelli, and more. The Northern Renaissance, which also occurred during the 15th and 16th centuries, featured artists such as Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Durer, Hieronymus Bosch, and more.
Learning about all of these significant artists in a meaningful way would be nearly impossible, even if we had all semester to focus on just the Renaissance. However, it is possible for us to break the learning into smaller chunks, and then put it all together. Think of a jigsaw puzzle, you will each take one piece of the puzzle to research, you will then share your learning with your classmates (assembling the puzzle).
Objective:
Research and explore your Renaissance artist. Write a 3-4 page research paper exploring their work, the context it was created, the meaning/symbolism, and/or the formal qualities.
Student Learning Outcomes Targeted:
Demonstrate and use a fundamental vocabulary required for the evaluation and description of art.
Recognize the origins and historical development of art, distinguish between major periods and styles of art.
Engage in processes related to the field of art, such as artmaking, critique, exhibition, and/or curation.
A Visual Timeline (exploring the work of the artist over their lifetime)
Format:
Your paper should be at least 3-4 pages of TEXT.
Your paper should contain images related to your discussion (these do not count towards page count).
All sources must be documented in an MLA-style Works Cited Page (does not count towards your required page count).
Remember all quotes or direct paraphrases should be cited with an in-text citation. For example: “This is a quote” (source)
Try to use elevated and professional language to discuss your ideas.
Try to use art terms and demonstrate that you know what they mean.
