Overview: Discussion Board 2-Managing and Accessing Credit
For Step 1, each student’s goal is to post on one of the following:
Identify and link to an article discussing the topic of credit cards and college students. The focus can be on common mistakes made by students using credit, predatory marketing, the impact of credit card debt on students, or another relevant topic. Your article cannot be from a company website or an educational website.
Share a credit card offer you or someone in your household has recently received (attach image if it is available, without personal information) from a credit card company. Discuss how this may entice customers to open accounts they don’t need, and how opening an additional account could impact your credit score.
Write an initial post explaining which prompt you are using, along with either a link to the article you chose or an image of the credit card offer you received. The post must be in paragraph form and be constructed as follows:
The initial discussion should utilize the PICK Analysis format. Please see this Prezi created by Professor Hannah Weiser to help you understand this method: http://bit.ly/pickanalysis. (This is also available in the Learning Module with Course Orientation materials.
You should identify and underline a minimum of 4 keywords or topics from our course materials that are relevant to the article of offer.
Summarize the article/credit card offer in your own words and in your summary it should be clear how your article/offer demonstrates the key words or topics you identified. As an example, if one of your terms is “venture capital” then you should note how the article relates to venture capital (i.e. “The article mentioned XYZ Inc. had just raised $500 million in a venture capital round which valued the company at $21 billion dollars.”).
Communicate your personal thoughts on the article/offer. Do you agree with it? Do you think it made valid arguments/points? Did it make you realize/understand something you hadn’t before?, Was it a good offer? What about the offer made you consider it or reject it?
PICK ANALYSIS Remember, all assignments in this course require the use of the PICK Analysis format. This overview is provided to help students in structuring essays in the course using PICK Analysis. P: Point, I: Identify relevant concepts and explain them, C: Connect the facts to those concepts, and K: Key takeaway (concludes your analysis and goes one step further to ask a question or provide additional inquiry).
