Tropical cyclones (hurricanes) are surely the greatest natural hazard/disaster faced by Floridians. One of the worst hurricanes in
recent years, however, struck coastal Louisiana and the city of New Orleans in August of 2005–Hurricane Katrina! Review your textbook, pages 304-307 (especially Figure 11.37 on p. 307). Also, review the relevant information on flooding of the Mississippi during Katrina in your Topic 3.5 notes attached.
Summarize what Katrina was such a “perfect” (catastrophic) storm:
–What was the Category number (Saffir-Simpson Scale, 1 to 5) of the storm?
–What side of the storm (east or west) struck New Orleans?
–Is this side the stronger or weaker side of the rotating hurricane?
–Why is New Orleans below sea level in the first place?
–What did the man-made levees along the Mississippi River have to do with the disaster?
