In this paper you will discuss the (potential, alleged) tension/conflict between Individual Liberty and The Common Good.
The following are the content instructions:
a. You are to give a clear characterization of what is individual liberty and what is the common good;
b. Explain clearly and thoroughly why there appears to be a tension/conflict between individual liberty and the common good;
c. Select three (3) areas where the conflict between individual liberty and the common good is apparent;
e.g., the problem of an unequal sharing of burdens, individualism, and that the very idea of common good is inconsistent with a pluralistic society like ours
e.g., Media/free speech; Ownership of natural resources such as land, water, oil,
etc.,: Ownership of various fire arms;
You may choose any other area that interests you; What Justifies the Authority of the State?
Is it sheer force?
Is it Divine Right?
Is it the Consent of the Governed?
Here is a very succinct quotation from a description of this problem in a Syllabus for a Political Philosophy class in another institution:
“… What makes these problems distinctive is the fact that politics is at once the creation of a legitimate public authority and a system of power, and the requirements of legitimate authority and the imperatives of power are often in tension with each other … ”
You must clearly describe in each case why there seems to be a conflict between individual liberty and the common good in each of the cases you selected.
d. Next, you must present your preferred solution to the apparent conflict in each case, and provide cogent arguments that support your solution.
e. Your conclusion to the paper must summarize the central elements of your position on the above cases of conflict.
^^^^ that is the outline from my professor. My personal beliefs of a structured society would work best under a healthy mixture of common good and individual Liberty. Please sound professional and philosophical. This is an abstract paper.
