Essay guidelines
1) You don’t need a full ‘literature review’, but your essay should make clear that you have consulted relevant material and that you are sensitive to how authors you have consulted have posed questions and used evidence.
2) Your essay should have a full bibliography of the items you have consulted, and these should be set out according to the guidance in the degree handbook.
3) Your essay should make clear that you recognise that the issues dealt with in this course are controversial, and you should acknowledge both sides of the argument wherever appropriate. (Which doesn’t mean you can’t come to a conclusion favouring one side of the argument).
4) Wherever relevant, you should deploy one or more of the ‘key concepts’ listed in the first assignment.
5) You should not use terms you don’t fully understand.
