Write an essay of approximately 800-1200 words on the western religion book that you’ve chosen from the first page on the syllabus (e.g., Akyol, The Islamic Jesus). You will be graded primarily on (1) how well you integrate the main course materials (God is Not One, the passages from the Bible and Qur’an, the required Blackboard readings, and the lectures), and (2) on the strength of your analysis.
Additional notes:
Please turn the paper in here, through Blackboard.
You may use APA or MLA for your footnotes and references. Just be consistent.
Structure of the paper:
Write a brief introduction with a thesis that addresses at least two main themes from your text.
Comment on how this book exemplifies, or contrasts with, the religion from which it derives. Make reference to concepts and quotations from Prothero (God is Not One), passages from the Bible or Qur’an, and/or the lectures and other readings as sources.
Compare your text with the major themes in western religion generally. (It might be that the text fits fairly closely with the themes of western religion generally, and so this may take more or less space, depending on the themes and the book you choose.) Here again, making reference to concepts from Prothero (God is Not One), the Bible, the Qur’an, and/or the lectures and other readings as sources will benefit your essay.
In total, provide at least three direct quotations from the class sources.
In the final paragraph, answer the question: How do you think college students respond to this book and the religion it describes?
