Write a concise, clear, and coherent essay of about six pages on the following topic. Your essay should have a clearly stated thesis that specifies what you will prove. Always give reasons for every substantive claim you make, informed by our discussions in class, and be careful not to leave out any steps in your reasoning. Be sure to answer the question, the whole question, and nothing but the question. Also, be careful to address the objections of those who might disagree with you. You are expected to demonstrate your mastery of the material covered in class, especially with respect to the canons of good reasoning.
In light of our investigation of an emerging Global Information Ethics, evaluate whether and how the computer revolution is likely to transform global ethics in much the same way the printing press transformed ethics in Europe. If such a transformation is likely, will it be for the better or for the worse? What, if anything, can we do now to help make sure it is for the better? In particular, what is the role of the computer professional in ensuring that things turn out for the better?
Be sure your answer addresses the following questions and authors:
• Does the computer revolution transform human aspirations? How? (Gorniak, Burton)
• Does Information and Communications Technology (ICT) undermine or disrupt our sense of who we are? How? (Postman, Lanier, Nussbaum, Bostrom)
• How does all this relate to our earlier discussion of tribalism? (Alexander, Haidt, Nguyen, etc.)
Your audience is a well-prepared peer: you can assume the reader is familiar with these authors, but you must not assume he/she understands or agrees with your interpretation of the writings under discussion. In other words, you don’t need to summarize every point of every author, but you do need to show that you understand each reading and how it relates to your thesis. If in doubt about how deep you need to go, go deeper . Do not just summarize views. Evaluate arguments!
